Pregnancy options advice in Kilmore
An unexpected pregnancy raises a great many questions at once, often before you have told anyone. A GP appointment gives you accurate information, and time.
Information first, decision when you are ready
People arrive at this appointment in very different places. Some already know what they want and need help arranging it. Others have no idea and want to think out loud with someone who is not personally involved.
Either is fine. The appointment is factual and non-directive: your GP explains each option, what it involves, and any timeframes that apply, then supports whatever you decide. You are not being steered.
Knowing how many weeks along you are matters, because some options are time-limited. That is usually the first thing to establish, and it is often the most useful thing you leave with.
Who this is for
- Anyone with a positive pregnancy test who is unsure what they want to do
- People who want accurate information before telling anyone else
- Patients who want to understand the timeframes involved
- Anyone who has already decided and needs help arranging the next step
- Partners and family members supporting someone through the decision
What the appointment involves
Confirming where things stand
A urine or blood test confirms the pregnancy, and an ultrasound establishes how many weeks along you are. Your GP will explain why the dates matter for the choices in front of you.
Going through the options
Continuing the pregnancy, adoption or permanent care, and termination – what each involves practically, what the timeframes are, and what support exists for each. Explained plainly, without a recommendation attached.
Time to think
You do not have to decide in the room. Many people come back a second time. Your GP will tell you if anything is genuinely time-sensitive so you can weigh that properly.
Arranging the next step
Whichever direction you choose, your GP can organise it: antenatal booking, referral to a service, or counselling support. Contraception can be discussed at the same time if you want it.
Book an appointment if
- You have had a positive test and are not sure what you want
- You want to know how many weeks along you are
- You need accurate information rather than what is online
- You have decided and want help arranging it
- You want to talk it through more than once
Before your appointment
Ask for a longer appointment when you book so you are not rushed, and say only as much as you want to reception. You are welcome to bring a partner, family member or friend, or to come alone. If you know the date your last period started, that helps establish dates quickly.

Will I be told what I should do?

Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, you are welcome to bring a partner, family member or friend – or to come on your own.
