Clinician reassuring a patient

Call first, so we can help you quickly

Dental pain rarely arrives at a convenient time. The quickest way to get help is to phone the clinic: tell reception what has happened, and they will find the earliest suitable appointment or tell you where else to go.

At the appointment, the dentist works out what is causing the problem and deals with the pain first. Sometimes that sorts it out on the day; sometimes it means a temporary repair and a follow-up visit to finish the job.

Some problems are not a job for the dentist. Swelling that is spreading – especially towards the eye or neck – or that makes it hard to swallow or breathe needs urgent medical care. Call 000.

Call us about

  • Toothache, or pain when biting
  • A broken, chipped or cracked tooth
  • A lost filling or crown
  • A knocked-out or loosened tooth
  • Swelling or a gum abscess
  • Bleeding that will not stop after an extraction

What to do straight away

A knocked-out adult tooth

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk. Put it back in the socket if you can and bite gently on a clean cloth; if not, keep it in milk. Call straight away – time matters. Never put a baby tooth back in.

A broken tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water, keep any pieces, and call to book. Sugar-free gum can cover a sharp edge in the meantime.

Toothache

Rinse with warm salty water and take pain relief as directed on the packet. Do not put aspirin on the gum. Call to book, and tell reception if there is any swelling.

Bleeding after an extraction

Bite firmly on folded gauze or a clean cloth for 20 minutes. If the bleeding continues, call the clinic or seek urgent care.

Call 000 or go to hospital if

  • Swelling is spreading towards your eye, your neck or under your tongue
  • You are having trouble breathing or swallowing
  • You have a high fever with facial swelling
  • You have had a hard knock to the head or jaw
  • Bleeding is heavy and will not stop

In an emergency, always call 000. We accept Victorian Government dental vouchers for emergency treatment – please bring yours to the appointment.
