Iron deficiency treatment in Kilmore
Iron deficiency is common, easily missed, and routinely blamed on being busy. Persistent tiredness, breathlessness on the stairs, hair shedding or restless legs are all worth a blood test.
Tired is a symptom, not a personality
Low iron builds slowly enough that most people adjust to it. They put the fatigue down to work, or children, or age, and only realise how flat they had been feeling once it is treated.
A simple blood test settles it. Ferritin measures your iron stores, and a full blood count shows whether it has started affecting your red cells – which can happen well before anyone would call it anaemia.
The important part comes next. Low iron is a finding, not a diagnosis, and the question is always why. Heavy periods and diet are the usual answers, but coeliac disease and slow blood loss from the gut present exactly this way – which is why replacing the iron without asking the question is not good enough.
Who this is for
- Anyone tired in a way that rest does not fix
- Women with heavy or prolonged periods
- People who are pregnant, or recently were
- Vegetarians, vegans and anyone eating little red meat
- Blood donors, and endurance athletes
- Anyone with unexplained hair loss, restless legs or breathlessness
How it is worked up
Testing
A blood test measuring ferritin, a full blood count and often iron studies. Results usually come back within a few days, and your GP will explain what your level actually means, since the normal range is wider than the optimal one.
Finding the cause
Questions about periods, diet, gut symptoms and any bleeding, plus coeliac screening where it fits. Depending on your age and the picture, your GP may recommend further investigation of the bowel.
Treatment
Most people start with iron taken by mouth, and your GP will explain how and when to take it, which makes a genuine difference. Where tablets are not tolerated or not enough, your GP will discuss an iron infusion and arrange it or refer you.
Rechecking
A repeat test after a few months confirms the stores are rebuilding. Stopping too early is far and away the most common reason iron deficiency returns.
Book an appointment if
- You are tired all the time and cannot explain it
- You get breathless doing things that never used to bother you
- Your periods are heavy or last more than seven days
- You were told your iron was a bit low and left it there
- You are pregnant, or planning to be
Before your appointment
You do not need to fast for iron studies. If you already take an iron supplement, mention it and bring the box, since it changes how the results are read. If you have had iron tested before, bring the previous results so your GP can see the direction of travel.

Frequently asked questions
How long until I feel better?
Energy often improves within a few weeks, but rebuilding iron stores usually takes three to six months of consistent treatment. The tablets need to keep going after you feel fine.
Can I just buy iron tablets from the chemist?
You can, but taking iron without knowing your level or the cause can mask something that needs investigating. A blood test first is worth the short wait.
Do you do iron infusions at the clinic?
Ask reception when you book. Where an infusion is the right treatment, your GP will arrange it or refer you to a service that provides it.
Why would my bowel need investigating?
In some patients, particularly over 50 or where there is no obvious cause, iron deficiency is the first sign of slow bleeding in the gut. Checking is precautionary and usually reassuring.
