Menopause management in Kilmore
Perimenopause often begins years before periods stop, and the symptoms are easy to attribute to something else – work, age, stress, everything at once. It is worth naming properly.
Not just hot flushes
A great many women arrive at this conversation after months of broken sleep, a shorter fuse than usual, and the unsettling sense that their memory is not what it was. Hot flushes may not even be on the list.
Perimenopause can run for several years while periods are still happening, which is exactly why it gets missed. Once it is named, most of it is treatable – and the treatments have changed considerably from what women were told a decade ago.
There is also a longer view. Menopause changes bone density and cardiovascular risk, and the years either side are a genuinely useful moment to look at both.
Who this is for
- Women whose periods have become unpredictable
- Anyone with hot flushes, night sweats or broken sleep
- Women noticing mood changes, irritability or brain fog
- Anyone with vaginal dryness, discomfort during sex, or bladder changes
- Women who stopped hormone therapy years ago and want it reconsidered
- Anyone whose menopause started early, before 45
What we can help with
Working out what is happening
For women over 45 the diagnosis is usually made on symptoms and cycle changes rather than blood tests. Where symptoms start earlier, testing is more useful and your GP will explain what it can show.
Menopausal hormone therapy
MHT is one of the options your GP can discuss with you. Whether it is appropriate depends on your own medical and family history, and your GP will go through what that means in your case rather than the headline version.
Non-hormonal options
Where MHT is not suitable or not wanted, there are other approaches to discuss for flushes, sleep and mood. Local vaginal treatments are a separate conversation again, and worth raising if that is what is bothering you.
Bone and heart health
Blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes risk, bone density scanning where indicated, and practical advice on strength training, calcium and vitamin D that actually makes a difference.
Book an appointment if
- Your periods have changed and you are in your forties or fifties
- You are not sleeping and cannot work out why
- Symptoms are affecting your work, mood or relationships
- You want to discuss hormone therapy properly
- Your periods stopped before you turned 45
Before your appointment
It helps to track your symptoms and cycles for a few weeks before you come in – even roughly. Bring a list of your medications, and anything you know about family history of breast cancer, blood clots or osteoporosis, since those shape the recommendation. Ask for a longer appointment.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a blood test to diagnose menopause?
Usually not. Over 45 the diagnosis is generally made on symptoms and cycle changes. Blood tests are more useful when symptoms begin earlier than expected.
Is menopausal hormone therapy right for me?
That depends on your symptoms, your age, and your personal and family history – it is not the same answer for everyone. Your GP will go through the benefits and the risks as they apply to you, and the decision is made together. We cannot answer it on a web page.
How long can I stay on treatment?
There is no fixed cut-off. Your GP reviews how you are going periodically and adjusts as things change, rather than stopping at an arbitrary date.
Can perimenopause affect my mental health?
Yes. Mood changes, anxiety and irritability are common and are not imagined. They are worth raising, because both hormonal and non-hormonal approaches can help.
